Papers, 1861-1908.

A small collection of papers of George W. Dutton, a Union officer during the Civil War, and commander of the guard which took the conspirators in the Abraham Lincoln assassination to Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas for their prison sentences. The papers contain commissions, letters, and a scrapbook containing clippings, currency, and photographs related to the Lincoln assassination and the transfer of the prisoners. The papers also include a letter from Henry Wirz, prisonkeeper at Andersonville Prison during the Civil War, to a "Miss Carrie," defending his actions against charges that he conspired to murder the Union prisoners. Dutton served as superintendent of the prison where Wirz was held prior to his execution for the crime. Other correspondents include Benn Putnam and Joseph Holt.

Joseph Holt, 1807-94, American public official, judge advocate general of the U.S. army (1862-75). A native of Kentucky, he became a well-known lawyer and prominent Democratic politician. In 1857, President Buchanan appointed him commissioner of patents in 1857, and in 1859 he became Postmaster General. In the beginning of 1861, before the outbreak of the Civil War, he was Secretary of War. A staunch opponent of the secession movement, Holt was instrumental in preventing Kentucky from seceding. ...

Benn Pitman (1882-1910) was a stenographer and founded the Phonographic Institute to promote Pitman shorthand.
